SAFETY RECALLS

CarDirect USA is committed to your safety regardless of the vehicle you drive.

An auto recall occurs when a manufacturer (or the NHTSA) determines that a car model (or several models) has a safety-related defect or does not comply with a federal safety standard. When this happens, the automaker will alert owners to the problem and usually offer a free repair.  Many owners, however, may not know that their vehicle has a recall and is in need a repair.

You can find up to date safety recall information online for your vehicle.  AND… The good news is that safety recalls fix problems recognized by the manufacturer with no cost to the consumer.

The bad news is that the majority of consumers ignore recalls, or don’t know about them all together.  A 2012 study done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found that 25% of problems covered by recall notices still remain unrepaired. We want you to be safe on the road.  Checking for safety recalls on your vehicle is as easy as 1-2-3…

Step 1:     Locate your VIN and use the link provided below to check your vehicle for recalls through the NHTSA.
Step 2:     If you have an open recall, schedule a service appointment with the local dealership for your vehicle make to have the work performed.
Step 3:     Go in to have your recall work done FREE of charge.

Consumer reports recommends that if you notice that something seems wrong with your vehicle, say something. Get involved. If your car develops a problem that you think could put you or someone else in danger, such as a fuel leak or a serious steering or braking defect that’s not related to wear and tear, report it to the automaker’s customer-service department and NHTSA’s safety hotline (www.safercar.gov). Automakers and the government depend on consumer complaints to find out about safety concerns and do something about them. If no one reports a problem, it’s as if it never existed.

BUMPER STICKERS ARE EVERYWHERE!

Politics… Colleges/Univerisites/Alma Maters… Family… Military… Musical Interests… Humor… Pop Culture… Sports/Fitness/Leisure… Pets… Brands… Controversial Issues/Positions…

Whatever your position is, people are using their vehicles to express themselves.  And others are leaving their vehicles to remain a blank canvas.  Those who love bumper stickers use their vehicle as a roving billboards to declare their love of god, country, schools, kids, dogs, or occasionally clever aphorisms.

It’s surprising to find that geographically, there are trends as to what people will put on their vehicle, whether men or women are more likely to put a bumper sticker on their vehicle, and the perceptions of other drivers in relation to those bumper stickers. A recent survey of more than 2,000 drivers nationwide provides us with some interesting data. The survey found that women were far more likely to have bumper stickers than men, with 63 percent saying they’d slapped one on their car. Men, meanwhile, were evenly split on the matter, with 50 giving in to the urge and 50 showing restraint.   In regional terms, folks from the South–particularly Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee–were the biggest fans of bumper stickers: 68 percent admitted that they had one or more on their car.  The content of those bumper stickers varied, but the most popular fell into the broad category of sports, fitness, and leisure activities, followed closely by politics. Gun-themed stickers were the least popular, making up just four percent of the total.

Living in Hampton Roads, we are happy to report that bumper stickers showing support for the military were the most appreciated: a whopping 88 percent of study participants gave them a thumbs-up.  This region also has a population that is passionate about fitness and sports.  That being said, marathon-related stickers came in second, with 80 percent saying that they approved of long-distance runners.

So “whether you’ve placed a witty slogan on the back of your whip or you’re using the rear of your ride as a billboard for political campaigns, bumper stickers help car owners add a layer of expression to their vehicles. Bumper stickers allow drivers to share their humor, successes, and allegiances in the form of adhesive statements.”

CHRISTMAS BLOG PIC

It’s that time of year again!  Can you believe Christmas is only 2 weeks away?  This is about the time we all start to reflect on the previous year and start our resolutions for next year.

A good way to start the new year, is to be generous!  Giving is what the holidays are all about. Keep in mind, some are less fortunate than others and there is no better gift than giving.  So many organizations make it easy to make another person’s holiday much better.  We are still honoring our Toys For Tots charity drive!  With the Toys For Tots charity, you can drop a toy in the box at participating stores all around Hampton Roads.  We personally have a box in case you wanted to donate! As a thank you for your considerable donation, we would like to offer up to $250 off the vehicle of your choice!

The last day of 2016 is 19 days away. Let us know some of the most memorable things of 2016 for you?  What are you looking forward to the most in 2017?

Our number one wish is everyone stays safe this New Year’s.  Having fun is always encouraged, but please, do it safely!  No need to drink and drive when there are so many smarter options right at your fingertips.  A sober designated driver is literally one phone call or click away!

I know here at CarDirect USA we are very thankful to all our customers and the opportunity to meet such wonderful people.  We are looking forward to another successful year!  Please have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year.

Back To School Essentials

back to school

We know that feeling!  Your excited!  Headed away from your parent’s house… on your way to college… and you’re lucky enough to be driving your own car packed full of all the essentials!  There are also a number of costs associated with having your car, and we want to make sure you are prepared.

1 – Make sure you are insured.  Driving without the minimum required insurance could get you in trouble – and you don’t want to get your license revoked!

2 – Although you are headed away to college, and away from your parents to a more independent life, you might want to consider remaining on their insurance policy.  This may be a more affordable option, just be sure that you are the primary driver of the vehicle you are taking to school with you.

3 – How can you make insurance work in your favor?  Show them what a responsible person you are.

  • Keep your grades up. Some insurance companies offer discounts for a GPA of 3.0 and higher.
  • Tell them the location of your school. Rates are sometimes lower outside of bigger cities.  And if you live within 3 miles of your school, you get another discount!
  • Choose a responsible vehicle. This may be the time to pass on that sports car – go for the more responsible vehicle.  And you might even want to choose a newer model which would require less maintenance.
  • Don’t let your credit get out of hand. Insurance companies look at your credit score as a factor when determining your rate.
  • Insurance companies love safety features! Be sure to review all of the safety features with your insurance company – you may get credits on your rate for these.
  • Drive smart! Follow the rules and laws of the road!  Insurance companies will give a lower rate to a driver that doesn’t have tickets on their driving record.

4 – Remember that you will still have to maintain your vehicle while you are away at school.  Find out where the nearest service stations are.  Keep track of when you need an oil change, how your tires are wearing, if your windshield wipers are worn out, and make sure those brakes are working well!

5 – Consider investing in a roadside assistance program, such as AAA.  You never know when you may need it, and the small cost associated with a membership may be a huge help for you one day!

At Car Direct, our goal is to help you in finding the right vehicle for you.  Check out our inventory page to see what we currently have in stock.  Don’t see what you’re looking for?  Give us a call – that vehicle may be on its way in.  If not, we’ll find it for you!

Wiper Blades Can Melt!

Summer heat can wreak havoc on a vehicle and its function. The warm weather, hot roads, extended trips, and dry air combine to create a hostile work environment for your car.

Windshield Wipers can get ruined by snow and ice in the winter.  But did you know that wiper blades can actually melt to your windshield in high heat in the summer?! The best way to prevent this is to put your wipers through a wipe-wash cycle from time to time.

Maintaining windshield wipers is a very important part of ongoing vehicle care. It’s also an item that is often overlooked, probably since it is not a part of the engine and mechanics of your vehicle.  But when the weather turns to rain, you’ll be quickly reminded of how important your wipers are; especially if they are not properly maintained.

When inspecting your wiper blades, here are a few things to look for:

  • Broken frame – detachment of frame arms at joints or connection points.
  • Metal Corrosion – especially at joints and claws.
  • Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge.
  • Flex rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks.
  • Check squeegee wiping edge for rounded edges which can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality.
  • Tug to ensure wiper blade has been securely installed on the wiper arm.
  • Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper frame.

Visibility is fundamental to safe driving. Although drivers depend on their vehicles’ wiper blades to clear away rain, sleet and snow, many wait to replace them until they need them the most. So remembering to maintain wiper blades regularly can maximize visibility, efficiency and reliability.

An easy way to remember to proactively change your wiper blades is to replace them on Groundhog Day. Whether the Groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter or an early spring, new wiper blades are necessary to prepare you for 6 weeks of harsh winter driving conditions or 6 weeks of Spring showers.

Your windshield wipers can be changed quickly and easily.  Here’s a quick how to:

  1. Remove the old wiper. Lift the arm away from the windshield and depress the small tab on the underside of the wiper where it meets the arm.  Slide the wiper blade off the arm by pulling the center towards the bottom of the arm.
  2. Line up the new wiper blade with the arm. Move the hook on the arm over the plastic clip on the new wiper blade.
  3. Pull the wiper blade tight onto the arm. It will click into place, and simply lower the arm slowly back onto the windshield.
  4. Repeat for the other wiper blade.
